Paul Bloom, a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto,
shares a magnificent essay on why we choose to suffer. Yes, I know, that sounds awful. Yet in search for a meaningful life, simple seeking pleasure isn't enough. We need to struggle and sacrifice.
The essay is adapted from his new book, “The Sweet Spot: The Pleasures of Suffering and the Search for Meaning,” which will be published on Nov. 2 by Ecco. It's worth reading every single word.
